Clinton Young

Clinton Young has been indicted for a 2001 murder in Harrison County.

Young’s case still continues to offer hope to all who have loved ones incarcerated in state Prisons.

He was indicted on August 12, 2022, as a special grand jury convened in Harrison County by the Texas Attorney General’s office. They indicted Young for capital murder in the November 25, 2001, shooting death of Doyle Douglas. After being jailed for two weeks Young is now free on bond and awaiting this new trial after spending two weeks in jail before his multi-million dollar bond was lowered. Young had been working at a court-approved job in Mississippi when he was arrested on the Harrison County charges.

Clinton Young was 19 years old when he was originally convicted of killing Doyle Douglas, 41, and Samuel Petrey, 52 in Midland County. He was on Texas death row for 20 years. Young came within 8 days of being executed in 2017 after the federal courts had denied his federal habeas corpus petition.

In January of 2022, he walked out of a Huntsville, TX maximum security prison and off Texas Death Row after an investigation into the Midland County District Attorney’s office.

Attorney Jacob Blizzard says the Young case has some broad implications for those who have been convicted in Midland County and for all those in Texas prisons seeking freedom using the 11.07 writ of habeas corpus process.

In Young’s case, a series of legal actions along with an investigation into financial records by the Midland County District Attorney revealed a serious problem not only with Young’s original prosecution but also over 300 other individuals who were convicted in that county over 20 years. According to a USA Today report 73 of those defendants, including Young, were still in prison, with 21 serving sentences of 50 years or more.
