ABOUT MARSHALL

I traveled quite often growing up. My fondest memories as a child are on my grandfather’s ranch in Los Banos, California helping out as best I could and learning the family business.

The Madrone Land and Cattle Company put food on the table for over three generations. It was passed down to my father in 2000. Yet it was my grandfather who always pushed me to do more with my life than work as a rancher. He wanted me to get an education.

Grandpa Magincalda walked with a cane all his life suffering injury from polio as a small boy. Though frail in physicality, his rough and rugged nature obfuscated any weakness from scrutiny.

He yelled loud when he talked, standing outside the ranch house giving orders, calling out any bluffs of disobedience, championing his belief that we could get the job done, and cursing the weather. Keen when it came to business, he had a talent for negotiation. He passed away years ago and my family continues to run the business today.

My grandfather always wanted me to go to college.

Instead, I joined the Marine Corps after 9/11 happened. I remember getting hazed doing pushups and jumping jacks, just going for hours, different exercises and them telling me hey look “might think we’re hard on you now, but when we go outside the wire, we need to know you’re good to go”.

They toughened me up… and that was both a physical and mental task. We had our disagreements as people who work close to one another often do. We were truly like brothers, and it was a hard life, but at the end of the day I knew I could count on them, and they felt the same way about me. “No matter what you always protect your fellow marine” and that was the way of it. We finally made it home and it wasn’t long before we began a workup for another deployment.

My second tour was the battle of Fallujah in 2004. We were assigned a tank to our unit, air support, and fought house to house for months inside Fallujah. Urban warfare was eye-opening to me. Witnessing the sheer sight of the destruction and human suffering.

I could never see things the same way again, especially after all the battles the unit had gone through, and the history of their successes and defeats. I had a whole new level of respect for the people there in the midst of it. These ideas of how what was happening turned over and over in my mind. My team leader was wounded the first week and I was given my first leadership billet taking his spot. I learned how to lead on the fly during the battle. I received two purple hearts and by the grace of God came home without losing any marines under my charge.

I will never forget the heroes, my friends, and amazing guys that sacrificed everything during that time.

In line with my grandfather’s wishes after graduating high school and serving my enlistment in the Marine Corps, I attended college. I wanted to work in criminal law to help others. I gravitated toward the law having gone through criminal proceedings as a marine. I studied as hard as I could and worked many jobs to support myself obtaining an education to work in the law.

I met my wife while attending law school. She was born and raised here in Abilene, it was a blessing when we were able to move here to her hometown to raise our children here.
